Telluride Bluegrass Festival

Telluride CO - June 17 - 20 1999

As thousands of fans flock to an exquisitely eclectic weekend of acoustic music, the head count surges in this mining-turned-resort community, with a capacity crowd of 10,000 people each day sprawling on the lawn. The original focus was on bluegrass, as the name implies, but as old-timers know, the festival now encompasses folk, country, gospel and roots music from around the planet.

Bill Monroe wasn't even the headliner the last time he played at this "bluegrass festival," as bluegrass purists will be sure to indignantly point out to you a few times, but there's usually no shortage of pickin' among the 30 or so acts, which in 1999 include Willie Nelson, Ricky Skaggs, Altan and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.

While camping makes the trip more affordable, and the setting is unbeatable, the festival and town itself are expensive. Set in a box canyon in the craggy San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, the road ends at Telluride. With snow-covered peaks on three sides, this is quite a setting to watch some of the world's finest musicians. Many visitors like to do as much mountain biking or hiking as they can in between concerts.

Telluride keeps the small-town good vibes, even with the leap in population. Helping to answer questions about where to go and what to do, locals form a roadblock to greet visitors on their way into town. Town bikes - big clunkers painted bright pink- make for excellent free transportation if you can find one. Booths offer food, arts & crafts and politics, and musical workshops and children's areas round out the festival's offerings.

RockyGrass - The Rocky Mountain Bluegrass Festival
